Many of us put age restrictions on ourselves. We may think that just because we are older, we have to hold ourselves back and accept some shoddy existence. But why does this have to be the case? What we all really want is freedom and all we do when we place age restrictions on ourselves is suck the joy from our spirits and sell ourselves short. Check out the following healthy tips to thrive no matter what age you are.
1. Forget About Milestones
If you didn’t complete something you wanted to by a certain age, don’t fret. Just because you didn’t get married by 28 doesn’t mean that you will die alone. Ask yourself “What do I believe I should have accomplished by this age?” You may be very surprised at how crazy your standards are. Now take a step back and think about what you have accomplished. Chances are you’re not giving yourself nearly enough credit. If you’re in your 20’s and you’ve managed to get an education, count yourself lucky- most young people in the world do not have a college education. Give yourself credit for every job you’ve ever had, for the relationships in your life or for something you never thought you could achieve and did, and the list goes on.
2. Befriend People Who Aren’t Your Age
When we make friends with people of all ages, we start to release perceptions that are based off of age. So look to take fitness classes with different ages of people, follow a diverse crowd on social media and get to know the people you work with, no matter what their age. Maybe someone will end up inspiring you or vice versa.
3. Stop Letting Age Get In The Way
A great way to get you to go for something, can be to ask yourself “If I was 10 years younger would I do this?” or “If I was 10 years older would I do this?” If the answer is “yes,” then go for it! So if you want to start your own business, take some time off to travel the world, or earn a new degree, just apply the -10/+10 guideline. Life gets exciting when we let go of age constraints and start living based off of what your spirit wants.
4. Do Some Age Inappropriate Activities
Do things that don’t seem “age appropriate.” Try going clubbing, dye your air a new bold color or ask for a big promotion. Do whatever you need to do to challenge your age biases. Some of us restrict our actions based on age. We may want to act like “everyone else” or “fit in,” but letting go of what you love to simply fit in sucks us of joy and is completely unnecessary.
