Looking at your tongue in the mirror regularly can help you detect issues in your mouth and different parts of your body. You can see signs of possible ailments before they become more serious. So consider giving yourself a regular health check and look out for the following signs.

Swollen Grey Or White Balloon Under Your Tongue

This means that you could have a congested salivary gland. This happens because something is blocking the tiny ducts so they are unable drain saliva. This can cause swelling, fluid build up and painful sensations. One of the most widely seen causes of this is a salivary stone. “It’s a calcium deposit similar to a kidney stone,” says Dr Mark Woff, chair of cariology and comprehensive care at New York University College of Dentistry. If it doesn’t go away on its own within a few days, make an appointment with your dentist. The deposit may need to be surgically removed.

Sores With A Halo Around Them

Healthy tongues are pink and smooth and don’t contain any bumps. If you notice any red or white patches, a spot with a red ring around it, white areas with a lace-like pattern, or an unhealing sore, you need to tell your doctor or dentist because this could be a sign of cancer. While other types of cancers are on the decline, oral cancer has increased by about 25 percent over the past 10 years. This is possibly due tothe rise in human papilloma virus (HPV), which is a risk factor for the disease.

Thick Red Tongue

If you have a thick red tongue, it could have something to do with your diet. You could have a vitamin deficiency. Get this- your tongue is one of the first places vitamin B12 deficiency shows up. This vitamin is needed to create healthy red blood cells. Feeble levels can lead to anemia. With that disease, your tongue may feel sore and is sometimes said to appear “beefy.” If you eat a typical western diet, you’re probably getting enough B12 since it’s mainly found in meat, eggs, poultry, milk and fish. If you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have a digestive ailment such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease, you may not be getting enough vitamin B12. It can help to take a multivitamin and eat fortified foods like cereal.
