What Is Switchel And Why Should You Drink It?

When it comes to post workout drinks, I usually tend to stick with protein shakes or coconut water, if not good old fashioned water itself. All of these are good options for anyone, as the protein in certain shakes can help rebuild and repair your muscles after a good workout, while the electrolytes found naturally in coconut water provide a much needed energy boost and rehydration for the body. Still, I’m always on the lookout for a new sports or energy drink to try. The problem is, many of these drinks tend to have copious amounts of sugar or other unnatural added ingredients, which pretty much cancels out, if not outright negates, any potentially healthy aspects these drinks would have had.

Recently, I read an article by Care 2 and learned about a drink known as switchel, and I was definitely curious. Besides having a super fun sounding name, switchel is an all natural sports drink that’s been around for at least two hundred years, thanks to old Amish recipes. Switchel was a drink that was developed to help reinvigorate and re-energize the men who spent their long, tireless days working out in the fields – but we can still use it today as a great post workout drink.

Switchel is made from just a few all natural ingredients – raw apple cider vinegar, ginger, a natural sweetener, and water. That’s it! You probably know about the many positive health benefits that apple cider vinegar can provide, but mixing it in with ginger and natural sweeteners such as maple syrup or raw honey can boost its effects to a whole new level.

In addition to restoring a proper balance of electrolytes in the body, switchel can work to regulate your metabolism, improve your digestion, strengthen your immune system, increase mental clarity and concentration, balance the pH in your body, and reduce levels of inflammation. Yes, switchel can provide all this for your body, and even more! You can find switchel at more than a few specialty stores or even online. Alternatively, you can whip up your own batch of the stuff right in your own kitchen in order to save time and money. Simply mix ¼ cup of raw organic apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons of real maple syrup or raw honey, 2 teaspoons of freshly grated ginger, and 2 cups of water. Shake the concoction in a jar and be sure to let it sit for a full 24 hours before drinking.
