Get the Skinny on Full-Fat Dairy Products

The nature of dairy products and how they affect the body is misunderstood surprisingly often, considering how often we consume dairy on a daily basis. If there’s one thing most people seem to all agree on, it’s that choosing low-fat or fat-free dairy options is the best thing to do for your diet. After all, fat is bad and contributes to weight gain, right? Studies are actually beginning to show that there are health benefits which come with consuming full-fat dairy products. If you’re someone who regularly incorporates foods such as milk, cheese, and yogurt into your everyday meals and snacks, you’ll want to make sure you’re in the know when it comes to the facts on full-fat dairy. 

Fat in Dairy: Not as Bad as You May Think

A few decades ago, dieticians and nutritionists began pushing a campaign which insisted all fat is bad news for the body. We’ve since learned that this is not entirely true; the body needs certain fats for energy. Unfortunately, many people still believe the misconception that fat must be avoided at all costs. What’s important to keep in mind is that there are certain fats which are indeed bad for health, but there are good fats out there as well. Processed foods which contain a lot of fat, such as fast food, chips, cookies, and candy, will very rarely provide the body with the healthy kind of fat. These foods usually contribute to weight gain and cardiovascular disease. 

The fat which is found naturally in many dairy products, as well as foods such as avocados and olive oil, can be beneficial to a person’s health. The trick is to avoid gorging on too many full-fat products too often, as being overindulgent can undo any positive aspects. 

Why Low-Fat May Not Be a Good Thing 

Low-fat versions of milk, yogurt, cheese, etc. have been artificially processed and manipulated to have their fat content stripped. Fat tends to make food taste good, which is why many manufacturers turn to another harmful substance in order to boost the flavor of low-fat products. Sugar is often added in high amounts to make low-fat foods more appetizing. As you can imagine, consuming high amounts of added sugars and sweeteners does no favors to the body. It essentially undoes any possible benefits you may have gotten from consuming less fat. 

Make smart choices by sticking with whole, unprocessed foods as often as you can. Fresh vegetables, whole grains, fatty fish, and yes, full-fat dairy can greatly improve your eating habits.
