Each day is filled with a certain amount of stressful situations. Whether the stressful situations be small or big, it is best to deal with your stress and anxiety before it gets the best of you. New research is pointing to exercise as the cure for stress, once again.
In a study recently published in The Journal of Neuroscience, researchers took mice to see how regular exercise helped with stress and anxiety. The research split the mice into two groups, one group which was sedentary, and the other which was active. They found that the mice who got regular exercise were able to adapt to their stressful situation and were also able to cope much more quickly than their counterpart, the sedentary mice. In fact, the sedentary mice showed signs of stress and anxiety long after the test.
While humans and mice are not the same, this is just another study to give validity to the fact that exercise can reduce stress. The conclusion of the study is that the mice who exercised developed a much different hippocampus than the sedentary mice. Dr. Gould, who wrote the paper on the experiment with her graduate assistant, said, “the hippocampi of active people might be less susceptible to certain undesirable aspects of stress than those of sedentary people.”
Basically, we all will have to deal with stress in every day life. It is unavoidable. However, regular exercise can help rewire our brains so that we are more able to cope and adapt to new and stressful situations without getting burdened down by the stress.
The type of exercise does not seem to matter, as long the individual partakes in it regularly. Regular exercise has been found to promote clearer thinking, calm feelings, and higher self-confidence. All three of these attributes help individuals to fight off stress and anxiety.
